All About Kokkini Hani The ideal place to
begin your exploration of the island by bus, car or on one

from the capital Heraklion run through the resort give access to the national

Vathianos Kambos Vathianos Kambos the area used to be an active Minoan centre throughout the Minoan era. The palace of Niros, close to the village is dated to the New Palatial Period 17th century B.C. It is a formidable building with more than 40 rooms on the ground floor only, stairs, corridors and two yards. The theory was that the building was used as a residence of the ever powerful local governor, or maybe a high priest; the palace was destroyed by fire. Many terracotta big and small jars were discovered on the site during the excavations, along with ritual artifacts and various items of everyday use. At the West of the village, close to Vathianos Kambos found what is thought to be the cemetery of the site; many ceramic urns where excavated unfortunately today the site has suffered almost total destruction, this is due to the water of numerous torrents that flow during the winter season.
A short distance into Kokkini Hani you'll see a sign saying "*Vathianos Kampos*". Don't be confused you're still in Kokkini Hani. The sign denotes an old district of the main village, which is hardly referred to anymore. But no one is aware as to why this sign still remains. Food Many of the locals still tend the land, the surrounding olive groves host some the best recognised olive oil in the world, the essential ingredient in Greek cooking. Fresh food is in abundance with many of the local taverna owners selecting the best village growers that produce quality local originally grown fresh fruit and vegetables giving the Greek dishes their distinctive flavour. Families Kokkini Hani is a family orientated resort but still has plenty of varied entertainments to cater for all ages from quite beach tavernas, to lively bars in resort.
